Guru

In the spiritual traditions of India, a guru is a spiritual teacher who guides students on the path of wisdom, religious practice, and self-realization. The Sanskrit term guru is traditionally understood as one who removes the darkness of ignorance through the light of knowledge. Within Vaishnavism, particularly in the Gaudiya tradition, the guru serves as an authorized representative of Bhagavan and a transmitter of sacred teachings. The guru's role extends beyond intellectual instruction; he or she embodies the principles of devotion and demonstrates them through personal conduct. Scriptures such as the Bhagavad-gita, the Upanishads, and the Srimad-Bhagavatam emphasize the importance of approaching a qualified spiritual master with humility, inquiry, and sincere service. Through initiation (diksha) and spiritual instruction (shiksha), the guru helps the disciple cultivate a conscious relationship with Krishna. For centuries, the guru-disciple relationship has been one of the primary means by which spiritual, philosophical, and cultural knowledge has been preserved and transmitted throughout India. In devotional traditions, the guru is regarded as a channel of divine grace and an essential link in the disciplic succession known as parampara.
