Brahmana

Brahmana is the first of the four social divisions (varnas) in the varnashrama system described in the Vedic scriptures. Brahmanas constitute the intellectual and priestly class of society, whose functions include studying and teaching the scriptures, performing sacred rituals and ceremonies, advising rulers, and maintaining the spiritual purity of the community. According to the Bhagavad-gita, the natural qualities of a brahmana include serenity, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, spiritual knowledge, and faith in God. In the Vaishnava tradition, the status of brahmana is not determined exclusively by birth in a brahminical family, but by the individual's qualities and conduct, in accordance with Krishna's teaching in the Bhagavad-gita: the four social divisions were created according to the qualities (guna) and work (karma) of each person. Gaudiya acharyas teach that while the position of brahmana is spiritually elevated, the position of a pure devotee (Vaishnava) transcends it, for a genuine devotee stands beyond the material designations of the varna system and acts exclusively in the service of Bhagavan.
