Vaiṣṇava
A Vaishnava is a follower of Vaishnavism, one of the major traditions of Hinduism devoted to the worship and loving service of Vishnu and His various manifestations, including Krishna, Rama, Narayana, and other forms recognized by different Vaishnava schools. The Sanskrit term vaiṣṇava literally means "one who belongs to Vishnu" or "a devotee of Vishnu."
Being a Vaishnava is more than a cultural or religious identity; it represents a spiritual path centered on [bhakti]], the cultivation of loving devotion toward Bhagavan. Common practices include chanting the divine names (japa and kirtana), studying sacred scriptures, worshiping the Deity (arcana), prayer, meditation, and participating in the association of fellow devotees. Ethical values such as compassion, humility, truthfulness, and respect for all living beings are also considered essential aspects of Vaishnava life.
Vaishnavism encompasses several major theological traditions, including Sri Vaishnavism, the Madhva tradition, the Nimbarka tradition, the Vallabha tradition, and Gaudiya Vaishnavism. While these lineages differ in certain philosophical interpretations and devotional practices, they share the belief that loving devotion to Bhagavan is the highest purpose of human existence.
Within Gaudiya Vaishnavism, a Vaishnava is understood as one who follows the teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and seeks to cultivate pure devotion to Krishna under the guidance of a qualified guru within an authentic disciplic succession (parampara). Spiritual advancement is measured primarily by the growth of humility, selfless service, and love for God and all living beings.
