Haridāsa Ṭhākura

Haridasa Thakura (c. 1450–1534) was one of the most prominent and beloved disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, celebrated in Gaudiya Vaishnava theology as the namacarya, the spiritual master of the holy name. His life is remembered as a testament to tolerance, humility, and the universal power of devotion. Although born into a Muslim family, Haridasa dedicated himself to chanting the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra, maintaining a daily vow of chanting three hundred thousand holy names. Because of his conversion and public chanting, he faced severe persecution from local rulers, which he endured with peace and forgiveness. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu held Haridasa in the highest esteem, presenting him as the living embodiment of the scriptural instruction to chant in a humble and tolerant state of mind. When Haridasa passed away in Jagannatha Puri, Chaitanya personally carried his body to the sea and led the funeral procession, declaring Haridasa to be a great saint whose devotion purified the world.
