Matsya

Matsya (literally "the fish") is the first principal incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Dashavatara list, appearing in the form of a giant fish. His story is narrated primarily in the Eighth Canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam and the Matsya Purana. Matsya descended at the end of a previous cosmic age (Satyayuga) to save the pious king Satyavrata (who would become the Manu of the current era) and the Vedic sages from a devastating universal deluge. The Lord, appearing initially as a small fish that grew rapidly to colossal proportions, guided a massive boat containing Satyavrata, the sages, and the seeds of all living species, tying the vessel to His horn using the serpent king Vasuki as a rope. During the cataclysm, Matsya also defeated the demon Hayagriva to recover the stolen sacred Vedic scriptures. In Vaishnava theology, Matsya represents God's role as the savior and preserver of spiritual knowledge and life. For devotees, meditation on Matsya inspires faith in divine shelter during times of cosmic and individual transition.
