Mahā-māyā

Maha-maya is the external energy of Bhagavan responsible for creating, sustaining, and governing the material universe. In Vaishnava theology, particularly in Gaudiya Vaisnavism, it functions as one of the Lord's divine potencies, keeping conditioned souls absorbed in material existence as long as they remain forgetful of their eternal relationship with Bhagavan. Although it creates the illusion that the material body and world are ultimate reality, Maha-maya always acts under the Supreme Lord's direction. According to the scriptures, Maha-maya covers the soul's spiritual awareness through the influence of the material modes of nature (gunas), giving rise to false ego, attachment, and the continuous cycle of birth and death. Under its influence, living beings experience the reactions to their Karma until they turn once again toward spiritual realization. In the Bhagavad-gītā, Krishna explains that His material energy is extremely difficult to overcome, yet those who surrender to Him can cross beyond it. From the perspective of Bhakti, Maha-maya is not an evil force opposed to God, but a divine energy serving a purposeful role within creation by providing souls with the opportunity to learn through material experience. Gaudiya theology carefully distinguishes Maha-maya from Yoga-maya, the Lord's internal spiritual potency. While Maha-maya governs the material realm, Yoga-maya facilitates the eternal loving exchanges between Bhagavan and His devotees in the spiritual world. Understanding Maha-maya helps explain why the material world is viewed as a temporary condition of consciousness rather than the soul's true and eternal home.
