Nāma-saṅkīrtana
Nama-sankirtana is the congregational chanting of the holy names of God, usually accompanied by traditional musical instruments like the mrdanga drum and kartala cymbals. Introduced by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, it is recognized in Gaudiya Vaishnavism as the yuga-dharma, the primary spiritual discipline prescribed for the purification of consciousness in the current age of Kali-yuga. Unlike japa, which is a quiet, individual practice, nama-sankirtana is public, dynamic, and communal. It is performed in streets and temples, inviting everyone to participate. Theological texts assert that the sound vibration of the holy name is non-different from God Himself. Consequently, hearing and chanting these names cleanses the mind of material desire and revives the soul’s inherent devotion. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu popularized this practice as a universal, non-sectarian method of spiritual realization. By making spiritual practice accessible in public spaces, nama-sankirtana transcends caste barriers and allows all people to experience the joy of connection with the Divine.
