Raganuga-bhakti

Raganuga-bhakti

Raganuga-bhakti is the practice of spontaneous loving devotion that follows in the footsteps of Krishna's eternal, intimate associates in the spiritual world (ragatmika-janas). It stands in contrast to vaidhi-bhakti, which is driven by scriptural rules, duties, and fear of consequences. Raganuga-bhakti is characterized by an intense internal greed (lobha) to cultivate the specific mood of love exhibited by the residents of Vrindavana—whether as a servant, friend, parent, or lover (gopi). Systematized by Rupa Govami in his classic work Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, this esoteric discipline must not be confused with emotionalism or premature imitation of advanced spiritual states (sahajiya). While the practitioner's external behavior remains aligned with scriptural etiquette, the internal practice centers on meditation (smaranam) upon the eternal pastimes of Radha and Krishna. By executing raganuga-bhakti under the guidance of a self-realized teacher, the devotee gradually uncovers their original spiritual body (siddha-deha), preparing them to enter directly into the transcendental loving exchanges of the spiritual realm.
