Sadhana-bhakti
Sadhana-bhakti is the practice of regulated devotion aimed at purifying the senses and awakening the soul's latent love for God. According to Vaishnava theology, it is the initial stage of bhakti, where spiritual activities are performed not out of spontaneous attraction, but through the conscious application of willpower, guided by scriptural rules and the instructions of a spiritual master. It is divided into two types: vaidhi-bhakti, which is motivated by scriptural duty and reverence, and raganuga-bhakti, which is inspired by an inner desire to follow the spontaneous love of Krishna's eternal associates. Typical sadhana activities include chanting the holy names, studying scriptures, temple worship, and serving other devotees. The ultimate goal of this disciplined practice is the eradication of material impurities (anartha-nivritti), preparing the practitioner's consciousness to naturally transition into the higher stages of spontaneous love and spiritual ecstasy. Through steady and regular practice, the mind becomes peaceful, and the heart is gradually prepared to receive the higher rays of spontaneous spiritual attraction.
