Sevā

In the philosophy and practice of bhakti-yoga, Seva translates to "devotional service" or "loving service." Rather than being a mundane concept of charity or work, Seva represents the practical, active expression of the soul's natural and eternal relationship with the Divine. According to Vaishnava teachings, the true identity of the living entity is that of an eternal servant of God (krsna-dasa). Consequently, Seva shifts the focus from self-centered desires to actions performed entirely for the satisfaction of Krishna and His devotees (vaishnava-seva). This service can take many forms, from physical tasks in a temple to philosophical teaching and singing the holy names. When executed with a pure heart, free from the expectation of material gain or spiritual liberation, Seva acts as a powerful purifying agent, dismantling the false ego and awakening the natural joy of selfless love. By performing service with devotion, the practitioner naturally develops humility and learns to see the presence of the Divine in all living entities.
