Bhakti-yoga

Bhakti-yoga

Bhakti-yoga is the spiritual path of loving devotion and active service directed toward the Supreme Personal Godhead. Described in the Vedic scriptures as the most direct and sublime method for self-realization, it differs from paths focused on physical control (hatha-yoga), intellectual analysis (jnana-yoga), or selfless action (karma-yoga) by prioritizing the cultivation of pure love (prema). Expounded in texts such as the Bhagavad-gita and the Srimad-Bhagavatam, bhakti-yoga engages the practitioner's body, mind, and senses in service to the Divine, rather than seeking dry renunciation. In the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, the practice of bhakti-yoga progresses systematically from initial faith (sraddha) to regulated practice (sadhana-bhakti) and ultimately to spontaneous divine love (prema-bhakti). Practical steps include hearing (sravanam), chanting (kirtanam), and remembering (smaranam) the names and qualities of God. By associating with holy persons (sadhu-sanga) and engaging in service (seva), the heart is cleansed of material desires, allowing the soul's natural, eternal relationship with the Supreme to manifest.
