Tulasi-puja

Tulasi-puja is the devotional worship of the sacred Tulasi plant (holy basil), a practice deeply revered in the Vaishnava tradition. Tulasi is considered an eternal devotee of Krishna in plant form, and her worship is one of the most intimate and daily aspects of devotional life. The procedures for Tulasi-puja are detailed in the Hari-bhakti-vilasa and include watering the plant, offering incense, lamps, and flowers, circumambulation (parikrama), and reciting specific prayers. Gaudiya acharyas teach that Tulasi possesses the ability to purify devotion and to please Krishna more than any other offering. Tulasi leaves are offered at the lotus feet of the deity, and Tulasi wood beads are used to make japa malas and the necklaces (kanthi-mala) worn by initiated devotees. Caring for Tulasi is considered direct service to Krishna, and her withering or neglect is regarded as a sign of spiritual inattention. Tulasi-puja holds a special place in the daily routine of Vaishnava temples and homes, representing the tangible, loving connection between the devotee and the Godhead.
