Hari-bhakti-vilasa
The Hari-bhakti-vilasa is an extensive treatise codifying the rules, rituals, liturgical practices, and codes of conduct for Vaishnava devotees. Compiled by Sanatana Goswami under the guidance of Gopala Bhatta Gosvami in the 16th century, it constitutes the most comprehensive normative guide in Gaudiya Vaishnavism for daily devotional life. Divided into twenty chapters, the Hari-bhakti-vilasa covers topics ranging from the qualifications of the guru and the procedures for initiation (diksha) to purification practices, deity worship (arcana), preparation of food offerings (prasada), and the observance of sacred fasts like Ekadashi. It also details the significance of Tulasi worship, the procedures for ritual bathing (abhisheka), and practices related to the application of tilaka marks. The text draws its instructions from a vast array of Vedic and Puranic scriptures, presenting them in a systematic and accessible way for practitioners. Within the Gaudiya tradition, the Hari-bhakti-vilasa serves as the definitive manual of spiritual etiquette, ensuring that devotional practices are carried out with precision and reverence, in accordance with the authorized disciplic succession (parampara).
