Vishnu Purana

The Vishnu Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas of the Hindu tradition, classified among the Sattvika Puranas (of the quality of goodness) and dedicated to the glorification of Lord Vishnu as the Supreme Reality. Attributed to the sage Parashara, father of Vyasadeva, it is considered one of the oldest and most concise Puranas, organized into six sections (amsas) covering cosmology, genealogies of avatars and royal dynasties, the geography of the universe, the lives of exemplary devotees, and instructions for attaining liberation. Unlike other lengthier Puranas, the Vishnu Purana is distinguished by its clear, direct, and theologically consistent style. In Vaishnava theology, this Purana is of particular importance because it explicitly establishes the nature of Vishnu as the Supreme Being and describes His potencies (para, kshetrajna, and avidya) in a manner that influenced great acharyas such as Ramanuja and Madhvacharya. Its teachings on dharma, devotion (bhakti), and the duties of the varnashrama system constitute a fundamental reference for practitioners and scholars of classical Hinduism.
