Buddha

Buddha (the Enlightened One) is the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu in the classical Dashavatara list, whose appearance is narrated in the First Canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. According to Vaishnava theology, Buddha appeared at a time when the priestly class was abusing the Vedic scriptures to justify the massive, uncontrolled slaughter of animals in ritual sacrifices. Buddha descended with the specific purpose of stopping this violence and teaching the principles of ahimsa (non-violence) and universal compassion. To achieve this, Buddha proposed a philosophical path that did not rely on the authority of the Vedas, inviting the populace to abandon sacrificial rituals and follow a path of ethical purification and meditation. In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Buddha is considered to have acted under a specific potency of God to carry out a temporary mission of pacification, and His doctrine is respected for its emphasis on non-violence, though not adopted as a direct devotional path to Krishna. The acharyas explain that the appearance of Buddha illustrates the infinite flexibility of Bhagavan, who can even present Himself without teaching direct devotion if necessary to restore the elemental compassion that serves as the foundation for future spiritual progress.
