Nityananda Prabhu

Nityananda Prabhu (born c. 1474) was the primary companion and co-leader of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in establishing the sankirtan movement of congregational chanting in medieval India. In Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, Nityananda is recognized as the incarnation of Balarama, Krishna’s elder brother, representing the original spiritual master (adi-guru) and the embodiment of God's limitless, unconditional mercy. Born in Ekachakra, Bengal, Nityananda traveled extensively as an ascetic before meeting Caitanya in Navadvipa. His mission was marked by bringing the message of devotion to the common people, ignoring caste barriers and social status. His compassion is illustrated in the conversion of the notorious criminals Jagai and Madhai, whom he forgave and transformed into saintly devotees despite their violent behavior. In Vaishnava practice, Nityananda’s grace is considered essential for approaching Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and entering the service of Radha and Krishna. He is worshipped alongside Caitanya as one half of the divine pair, Gaura-Nitai, and his teachings emphasize humility, devotion, and service.
