Dipavali

Dipavali (or Diwali, the Festival of Lights) is one of the most widely celebrated and significant festivals of India, observed during the month of Kartika (October-November). It commemorates the return of Lord Ramachandra to His kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating the demon Ravana, an event where the citizens illuminated the entire path with clay lamps (diyas) to dispel the darkness. In the Vaishnava tradition, Dipavali represents the victory of spiritual light over material darkness, and of devotion over ignorance. On this day, temples and homes are meticulously cleaned and adorned with hundreds of oil lamps, flowers, and decorative rangoli designs. Special prayers are offered to goddess Lakshmi and to Krishna in His childhood form as Damodara, recalling His childhood pastimes in Gokula. In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the observance of Dipavali is closely linked to the daily meditation on the Damodara pastime during the holy month of Kartika. For bhakti-yoga practitioners, the physical lighting of lamps symbolizes the desire to ignite the lamp of pure devotion and transcendental knowledge in the heart, dispelling the illusory influence of maya.
