Padma Purāṇa

The Padma Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas, classified as a Sattvika Purana, meaning it promotes the quality of goodness and glorifies Lord Vishnu as the Supreme. The text is named after the cosmic lotus that grew from Vishnu's navel, which served as the birthplace of Lord Brahma. Divided into several parts, it covers a wide range of subjects, including cosmology, genealogies, descriptions of holy places, and ethical guidelines. For the Vaishnava tradition, the Padma Purana holds great theological importance. It contains detailed instructions on executing bhakti-yoga, the glories of the holy name, and the significance of observing sacred times such as the month of Kartika. Notably, it is the source of the Damodarastakam, a central hymn sung by devotees. Through its stories and instructions, the Padma Purana teaches how to cleanse the heart and cultivate devotion. It remains a key reference for understanding Vedic culture, providing spiritual seekers with a clear map for their journey back to the spiritual world.
