Kartika

Kartika is the most sacred and auspicious month in the Hindu lunar calendar, occurring during the months of October and November. In the Vaishnava tradition, this holy period is dedicated to the worship of Lord Krishna in his beautiful childhood form as Damodara, making it widely known as the month of Damodara. According to ancient scriptures such as the Padma Purana, any spiritual activities performed during Kartika yield immense and eternal benefits, far exceeding those performed at other times of the year. Consequently, devotees accept special vows of discipline, increasing their daily chanting of the holy names, reading sacred texts, and practicing acts of charity. The most famous practice is the daily offering of a ghee lamp to Lord Damodara while singing the Damodarastakam prayer. Kartika is also associated with many sweet pastimes of Krishna in Vrindavana, including the lifting of Govardhana Hill and the butter-stealing pastimes. It provides a valuable season of deep spiritual renewal, self-purification, and joy.
