Prasada
Prasada (literally "mercy" or "grace") is food that has been offered to the deity of the Supreme Lord with devotion and, after being accepted by Him, is distributed among the devotees as a carrier of His spiritual grace. In the Vaishnava tradition, the preparation and offering of prasada is an act of seva (devotional service) of profound importance, transforming the ordinary activity of cooking and eating into spiritual practice. Foods are prepared exclusively with pure, sattvic ingredients (no meat, fish, eggs, or other products involving violence), following the standards established in the Hari-bhakti-vilasa. Once cooked, they are offered with mantras and prayers before the deity (arcana), and only after this offering is the food considered spiritualized and fit for consumption. The Bhagavad-gita teaches that eating food not offered to God generates karmic reactions, while consuming prasada frees the devotee from such reactions. Gaudiya acharyas emphasize that prasada is not simply blessed food, but the tangible mercy of Krishna, capable of purifying the heart and awakening devotion even in those who consume it without conscious spiritual intention.
