Radhashtami

Radhashtami is the sacred festival commemorating the appearance anniversary of Srimati Radharani, the supreme pleasure potency (hladini-shakti) of Lord Krishna and His eternal consort in the divine pastimes (lila) of Goloka Vrindavana. It is celebrated annually on the eighth day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadra (August-September), exactly fifteen days after Janmastami. In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Radhashtami is a day of utmost importance and deep devotion, as Radharani represents the highest personification of pure, selfless love for Krishna (prema). During this auspicious day, devotees observe a partial fast until noon and dedicate themselves intensely to singing devotional songs that glorify the divine qualities of Radha. The temple deity is decorated opulently, and a grand ritual bathing ceremony (abhisheka) is performed using auspicious substances such as milk, yogurt, and honey, followed by the distribution of a festive feast that becomes prasada. The acharyas explain that it is impossible to understand or attain Krishna without the mercy of Radharani; therefore, the attentive observance of this festival is fundamental for any practitioner aspiring to advance on the path of bhakti-yoga.
