Shakti

Shakti is a fundamental Sanskrit term meaning "potency," "energy," or "power," and in Vaishnava theology it designates the constitutive energies of the Supreme Lord (Bhagavan). According to the doctrine of acintya-bhedabheda, God and His energies are simultaneously identical and different: the shaktis are not entities separate from Krishna, but functional aspects of His being that manifest reality in all its dimensions. Gaudiya acharyas classify the shaktis into three main categories. The para-shakti or svarupa-shakti (the internal potency) is the most elevated, manifesting as hladini-shakti (the aspect of pleasure, represented by Radha), samvit-shakti (the aspect of knowledge), and sandhini-shakti (the aspect of existence). The tatastha-shakti (the marginal potency) refers to the individual souls (jivas), who can orient themselves toward either the spiritual or material world. The bahiranga-shakti or maya-shakti (the external potency) is the material energy that creates and sustains the physical universe. Understanding the nature of the shaktis is essential for the bhakti-yoga practitioner, as it demonstrates that everything in existence is a manifestation of God's energy and that the soul's task is to align itself with its original source through devotion.
