Acintya-bhedabheda
Acintya-bhedabheda (literally "inconceivable simultaneous oneness and difference") is the central philosophical doctrine of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, formulated by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and systematized by the Six Gosvamis of Vrindavana, especially Jiva Goswami in his Sat-sandarbhas. This doctrine resolves the apparent contradiction between monistic (advaita) schools, which hold the absolute identity of the soul and God, and dualistic (dvaita) schools, which affirm an irreducible difference between them. According to acintya-bhedabheda, the individual soul (jiva) is simultaneously one with God in spiritual nature (quality) and different from Him in magnitude and power (quantity). This relationship is termed "inconceivable" (acintya) because it transcends the limited categories of ordinary human logic. The doctrine also applies to the relationship between Bhagavan and His energies (shakti), between the material and spiritual worlds, and among the various divine manifestations. In devotional practice, this philosophical understanding supports the soul's position as the eternal servant of Krishna: neither identical to Him (which would negate the loving relationship) nor radically separate (which would prevent spiritual communion). Acintya-bhedabheda thus forms the metaphysical foundation upon which the entire edifice of Gaudiya bhakti-yoga is built.
