Sharanagati
Sharanagati (literally "taking shelter" or "surrender") is a central concept in Vaishnava theology that designates the voluntary, complete, and loving surrender of the soul to the Supreme Lord. In the spiritual practice of bhakti-yoga, sharanagati constitutes the foundational attitude without which no genuine spiritual progress is possible. The scriptures define six components of this surrender: accepting what is favorable for devotion (anukulyasya sankalpa), rejecting what is unfavorable (pratikulyasya varjanam), firm faith in Krishna's protection (rakshishyatiti vishvasa), accepting the Lord as protector and maintainer (goptrtve varanam), offering everything to the Lord (atma-nikshepa), and humbly recognizing one's own helplessness (karpanye). Bhaktivinoda Thakura composed a famous collection of songs titled "Sharanagati" that poetically expresses each aspect of this surrender. In the Bhagavad-gita, Krishna concludes His instructions by inviting Arjuna to abandon all temporary dharmas and take exclusive shelter in Him (sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja). Gaudiya acharyas teach that sharanagati is not a passive act of resignation, but an active movement of the heart toward full trust in divine mercy.
