Yoga-maya

Yoga-maya

Yoga-maya is the internal, inconceivable potency of Bhagavan that organizes, facilitates, and protects the divine pastimes (lila) of Krishna and His eternal associates. Unlike maya (the external energy that creates material illusion and spiritual forgetfulness), yoga-maya operates on the spiritual plane, generating the perfect conditions for the exchanges of divine love (prema) to manifest in their fullness. For example, it is yoga-maya that causes mother Yashoda to forget Krishna's omnipotent divinity and see Him simply as her mischievous little child, thus allowing parental love to flow without the barriers of awe and reverence. Similarly, yoga-maya enables the gopis of Vrindavana to relate to Krishna as their beloved without awareness of His supreme opulence. In Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, yoga-maya is considered an expression of the hladini-shakti (pleasure potency) and is essential for preserving the sweetness (madhurya) and intimacy of Krishna's pastimes. Understanding the function of yoga-maya helps the bhakti-yoga practitioner appreciate how God becomes accessible and vulnerable before the pure love of His devotees, revealing the supremacy of love over power.
