Advaita Ācārya

Advaita Acarya (1434–1559) was a revered and pivotal figure in the inception of the Gaudiya Vaishnava movement in medieval Bengal. In Gaudiya Vaishnava theology, he is worshipped as a combined avatar of Maha-Vishnu and Sadasiva, constituting one of the members of the Pancha-tattva (the five divine manifestations) along with Chaitanya, Nityananda, Gadadhara, and Srivasa. Advaita Acarya was an elder scholar in Shantipur. Deeply distressed by the spiritual decline and materialism of society, he prayed for the descent of the Supreme Lord. He did this by offering sacred Ganges water and tulasi leaves while chanting fervently. It is understood that his prayers compelled Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to descend to Earth. Throughout Chaitanya’s life, Advaita Acarya assisted Him in spreading the sankirtan movement, standing against social and religious orthodoxies. His life demonstrates the union of deep Vedic knowledge (jnana) with intense devotional ecstasy (bhakti). For practitioners, his memory represents the power of prayer and the essential foundations of the early Vaishnava community.
