Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of fortune, wealth, beauty, and prosperity, both material and spiritual. In Vaishnava theology, she is the eternal consort of Lord Vishnu, representing His internal energy of pleasure, compassion, and grace. Residing with Him in the majestic spiritual realm of Vaikuntha, Lakshmi is not an independent deity but is ontologically one with the Supreme Lord, manifesting separately to facilitate divine loving exchanges. Although she possesses infinite opulence, her highest attribute is her unalloyed devotion to Vishnu. Scriptures like the Srimad-Bhagavatam describe how Lakshmi sought to enter the intimate rasa-lila dance of Krishna in Vrindavana. She performed severe penances in the forest of Bilvavana to qualify, but was unable to cross over because she could not lay aside her majestic mood of awe and reverence to adopt the simple, spontaneous love of the gopis. Devotees worship her as the universal mother, praying for spiritual abundance and the purification of their hearts. Through her mercy, one obtains the qualities of humility and devotion necessary to serve the Divine Couple, making her role essential in the path of bhakti-yoga.
