Sanātana Gosvāmī

Biografía

Sanatana Goswami (1488–1558) was one of the most prominent disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the elder brother of Rupa Gosvami. As the senior member of the Six Gosvamis of Vrindavana, he played a fundamental role in defining the theology, devotional ethics, and temple practices of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Prior to his spiritual dedication, Sanatana served as the chief minister to the Sultan of Bengal. Renouncing his wealth and political power, he traveled to meet Chaitanya, who spent two months in Varanasi personally instructing him on Vaishnava philosophy. Sanatana Goswami authored several core texts, including Hari-bhakti-vilasa, a comprehensive guide on devotional rituals and lifestyle, and Brihad-bhagavatamrita, a narrative outlining the soul's journey through the universe to the spiritual world. Known for his profound humility, extensive scholarship, and fatherly compassion, Sanatana is remembered as a pillar of the early Gaudiya Vaishnava movement. His teachings emphasize the importance of deep study combined with practical service, forming a balanced foundation for all future generations of Vaishnavas.
