Akarma
Akarma is a philosophical concept expounded in the Bhagavad-gita that refers to action performed without generating karmic reactions, meaning action that does not bind the soul to the cycle of samsara. Krishna teaches Arjuna that understanding the nature of karma (action with reaction), vikarma (forbidden action), and akarma (inaction within action) is extremely difficult even for the learned. In Vaishnava theology, akarma does not mean the total cessation of activity or passive immobility, but rather the ability to act in the world without creating karmic bondage. This is achieved when action is performed as selfless service to Bhagavan, without attachment to results or selfish motivation. The devotee who acts in bhakti-yoga operates on the platform of akarma, because each action is dedicated to Krishna and generates no binding material consequences. This principle resolves the apparent dilemma between action and renunciation: it is not necessary to abandon activity, but to purify its motivation. The practice of bhakti transforms all mundane action into seva (devotional service), positioning the practitioner beyond the laws of karma and enabling spiritual freedom while acting in the material world.
