Gunas
The gunas are the three fundamental qualities or modes of material nature (Prakriti) according to Sankhya philosophy and Vaishnava theology: sattva (goodness, balance, and illumination), rajas (passion, activity, and desire), and tamas (ignorance, inertia, and darkness). These three modes operate constantly and simultaneously throughout all of material creation, directly influencing the psychology, behavior, dietary preferences, beliefs, and destiny of living beings. In the Bhagavad-gita, Krishna explains in detail how each guna manifests across different aspects of human life: faith, food, sacrifice, austerity, and charity. According to this analysis, every person acts under the predominant influence of one or another guna, which shapes their character and spiritual trajectory. The goal of bhakti-yoga is not merely to elevate oneself to the mode of goodness (sattva), but to transcend all three material modes entirely through pure devotion to Krishna (nistraigunya). In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the devotee who practices suddha-bhakti is positioned beyond the influence of the gunas, accessing a spiritual consciousness that is transcendental and eternal in nature.
