Mahat-tattva

The mahat-tattva is the first element to manifest during the process of cosmic creation according to Vedic cosmology and the Sankhya philosophical system adopted by Vaishnavism. When Bhagavan, through His expansion as Maha-Vishnu, casts His glance upon Prakriti (primordial material nature), the first transformation that occurs is the manifestation of the mahat-tattva, also called "the great cosmic intelligence" or total material consciousness. This principle constitutes the substratum from which all subsequent elements of creation are generated: ahankara (false ego), the gunas (three material qualities), the senses, sense objects, and the five gross elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether). In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, the process of creation is described in detail, showing how each element emerges sequentially from the preceding one. For bhakti-yoga practitioners, understanding the mahat-tattva is important for acquiring a coherent vision of the origin and nature of the material world, thereby reinforcing the understanding that matter is an energy of God and not an independent entity.
