Nrisimha-chaturdashi

Nrisimha-chaturdashi is the sacred festival celebrating the appearance of Lord Nrisimhadeva, the half-man, half-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is celebrated on the fourteenth day (chaturdashi) of the waxing moon in the month of Madhusudana (April-May). As narrated in the Seventh Canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Nrisimhadeva appeared from a stone pillar to protect His pure devotee, the child Prahlada Maharaja, and to destroy his demonic father, King Hiranyakashipu, who had terrorized the entire universe. For practitioners of bhakti-yoga and Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Nrisimha-chaturdashi is a day of great spiritual significance, as Nrisimhadeva is invoked as the protector of devotion and the destroyer of internal obstacles (such as lust, anger, and pride) that hinder spiritual progress. On this day, devotees observe a partial fast until dusk, the hour when the Lord appeared. In temples, a ritual bathing ceremony (abhisheka) is performed with auspicious substances, glorifying prayers are chatted, and a feast is offered and distributed as prasada. Faithful observance of this day strengthens the devotee's sharanagati (refuge in the Lord) and faith in God's infallible protection.
