Sannyasa

Sannyasa is the fourth and final stage of life (ashrams) in the varnashrama system, corresponding to the complete renunciation of material life for exclusive dedication to spiritual realization and service to Bhagavan. The sannyasi abandons all possessions, family ties, and social identities, adopting saffron-colored garments and a spiritual name marking the new identity as a renunciant. In the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, sannyasa has a specific purpose: it is not a dry or impersonalist renunciation, but the complete dedication to bhakti-yoga, to preaching the divine message, and to compassionate service to conditioned souls. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu accepted sannyasa at the early age of twenty-four to facilitate His mission of spreading sankirtan throughout India, and His example establishes the model of the Gaudiya sannyasi: an itinerant preacher, intoxicated with divine love, distributing the chanting of Krishna's names without distinction of caste, creed, or social condition. Gaudiya acharyas teach that sannyasa should not be taken prematurely or from selfish motivations, but as a natural response to the maturation of inner devotion.
