Vaishya

Vaishya

Vaishya is the third of the four social divisions (varnas) in the varnashrama system, corresponding to the class of merchants, farmers, and cattle herders. According to the Bhagavad-gita, the natural activities of a vaishya include agriculture, cow protection (go-raksha), and trade. In Vedic society, vaishyas fulfilled a vital economic role by producing food, raising cattle, and generating material prosperity for the entire community, always within the ethical framework of dharma. Cow protection is a responsibility particularly emphasized in the Vaishnava tradition, as the cow is considered one of the seven mothers and her protection is a sacred duty. In Vaishnava theology, the vaishya is associated with a mixture of rajas (commercial activity) and tamas (physical labor), and their activities are purified when performed as service to Bhagavan, offering the fruits of labor as devotion. Gaudiya acharyas teach that all social classes can achieve spiritual perfection through the practice of bhakti-yoga, and that the vaishya designation, like the others, is temporary and relates to the material body, not to the eternal nature of the soul.
