Caitanya-caritamrta

The Caitanya-caritamrta is the definitive biography and theological treatise on the life and teachings of Caitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534), the founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. Composed in the late 16th century by Krishnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami, it is written primarily in Bengali, interspersed with critical Sanskrit verses, and is considered a masterpiece of medieval Indian devotional literature. The work is divided into three sections: Adi-lila, Madhya-lila, and Antya-lila. These chronicle Caitanya's early life, His travels and philosophical debates, and His final years of intense devotional ecstasy in Jagannatha Puri. Philosophically, the text is highly significant because it systematizes the doctrine of acintya-bhedabheda-tattva (inconceivable oneness and difference) and details the path of spontaneous devotion (raganuga-bhakti). It reveals Caitanya Mahaprabhu as the combined avatar of Radha and Krishna, appearing to experience the love of Radha and to distribute the chanting of the holy names (sankirtan) to all. For Vaishnavas, it remains an indispensable source of theological guidance and inspiration, bridging philosophical inquiry with deep spiritual sentiment.
