Nāma-aparādha

Nāma-aparādha is an offense committed against the holy name of Kṛṣṇa. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition teaches that the Lord’s name is fully spiritual and nondifferent from Kṛṣṇa; chanting is therefore neither symbolic practice nor ordinary repetition. Although the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra always retains its potency, an offensive disposition prevents the chanter from fully tasting its presence and delays the awakening of love of God. The śāstras enumerate ten principal offenses. They include criticizing the Vaiṣṇavas, regarding the demigods as independent of Viṣṇu, disobeying the guru, minimizing scripture, imagining interpretations of the name’s glories, sinning on the strength of chanting, equating chanting with ordinary piety, instructing the faithless without discernment, remaining inattentive, and maintaining material attachments even after hearing the name’s glories. These categories guide sincere self-examination; they should not become a cause of hopelessness or a weapon for judging others superficially. Freedom from nāma-aparādha requires humility, attention, repentance, and continued shelter in nāma itself. Service to the Vaiṣṇavas, guidance from the guru, hearing hari-kathā, and persevering chanting gradually purify the heart. As offenses diminish, nāmābhāsa—the reflection of the pure name—arises. When bhakti matures, the devotee reaches śuddha-nāma, pure chanting that reveals the jīva’s eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa and awakens prema.
