Hari-kathā

Hari-kathā means narration or conversation about Hari, a name of Bhagavān indicating Him who removes ignorance and attracts the heart. It includes the teachings, names, qualities, forms, associates, and pastimes of Kṛṣṇa, transmitted according to śāstra and guru-paramparā. It is neither religious entertainment nor literary speculation. Faithful hearing brings consciousness into contact with the Lord because Kṛṣṇa is present in transcendental sound that glorifies Him. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition regards hearing, śravaṇa, as a foundation of bhakti. Authentic hari-kathā descends through teachers who serve what they received, not speakers who reshape doctrine for fame or popularity. It should increase remembrance of Kṛṣṇa, appreciation for the Vaiṣṇavas, and desire for service. Elevated accounts, especially intimate pastimes of Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, require guidance, pure intention, and gradual understanding lest they be reduced to mundane projection. A listener participates through attention, sincere questions, reflection, and practical application. Deliberately retaining an offensive attitude restricts the fruit, whereas humble practice purifies even a conditioned heart. Hari-kathā complements the mahā-mantra, kīrtana, and service to the guru. In Kali-yuga, when the mind is readily distracted, it offers accessible spiritual association and renews vision. Its perfection is measured not by accumulated information but by awakening surrender, transforming conduct, and leading toward prema for Kṛṣṇa.
