Shastras

The Shastras are the sacred scriptures and authoritative texts of the Vedic tradition. The Sanskrit word śāstra literally means "instruction," "teaching," or "that which governs through knowledge." It refers to the body of revealed literature that preserves spiritual wisdom, philosophy, theology, ethics, ritual practice, and guidance for human life. Within the Gaudiya Vaisnavism, the Shastras are one of the three foundational authorities, together with the Guru and the community of Vaisnava, a principle commonly known as guru-sādhu-śāstra. Their purpose extends far beyond preserving religious doctrine: they explain the nature of the Atma, the eternal relationship between the individual soul and Bhagavan, the laws of Karma, the influence of Māyā, and the path of Bhakti-yoga. Vedic literature encompasses a vast collection of works, including the Vedas, the Upaniṣads, the purāṇa, the Vedānta-sūtra, the Mahābhārata, and the Rāmāyaṇa. Within the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition, particular importance is given to the Bhagavad-gītā, regarded as the essence of Vedic wisdom; the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, accepted as the natural commentary on the Vedānta and the mature literary work of Vyāsadeva; and devotional classics such as the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu, Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, Caitanya-caritāmṛta, and Upadeśāmṛta. According to the Vaiṣṇava tradition, the Shastras are not merely historical or philosophical documents. Their ultimate purpose is to transform consciousness, guide the practitioner toward spiritual realization, and awaken pure love for Kṛṣṇa. For this reason, they are traditionally studied under the guidance of the Guru-paramparā, rather than through independent speculative interpretation.
