Samādhi
Samādhi is stable absorption of consciousness in spiritual reality and the culmination of the meditative process of aṣṭāṅga-yoga. Following dhāraṇā and dhyāna, the mind ceases to scatter and remains joined to its object. It is neither sleep, unconscious trance, nor pathological loss of awareness. In the Vedic sense, it is concentrated lucidity and temporary or mature freedom from identification with the mind’s material movements.
The nature of samādhi depends upon its object and the practitioner’s understanding. It may be directed toward Brahman, Paramātmā, or Bhagavān. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition regards personal absorption in Kṛṣṇa as most complete: consciousness and individuality do not disappear but become entirely dedicated to service. The Vaiṣṇavas may also use samādhi for a saint’s profound devotional absorption and for the place where the saint’s body is honored after departure.
A devotee neither pursues unusual states for prestige nor confuses temporary emotion with realization. Hearing hari-kathā, chanting the mahā-mantra, remembering the Lord’s pastimes, and serving under the guru gradually concentrate the mind. In Kali-yuga, nāma-saṅkīrtana makes dynamic absorption possible while chanting and serving communally. The authentic measure is not external appearance but humility, detachment, steady character, and growing love. Samādhi reaches perfection when the jīva constantly remembers Kṛṣṇa and every faculty consciously participates in bhakti.
