Brahmachari

Brahmachari is the first of the four stages of life (ashrams) in the varnashrama system, corresponding to the period of celibacy, study, and spiritual formation under the guidance of the guru. Traditionally, the brahmachari was a young student residing in the gurukula (the school of the spiritual master), where they studied scriptures, cultivated discipline of body and mind, practiced austerity, and developed the moral and spiritual qualities necessary for a virtuous life. Celibacy (brahmacharya) is the defining characteristic of this stage, as the conservation of sexual energy is considered essential for intellectual and spiritual development. In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the brahmachari life is specifically oriented toward bhakti-yoga: the young devotee learns the principles of devotion, chants japa daily, studies texts such as the Bhagavad-gita and the Srimad-Bhagavatam, and actively participates in temple seva. The acharyas teach that the brahmachari does not withdraw from the world, but trains heart and mind to live in the world without being contaminated by it, preparing for the following stages (grihastha, vanaprastha, or sannyasa) according to natural inclination and the guru's guidance.
