Ekadashi

Ekadashi

Ekadashi is the sacred fasting day observed twice a month, on the eleventh day (ekadashi means "the eleventh") of each lunar fortnight, both waxing and waning. In the Vaishnava tradition, the observance of Ekadashi is one of the most important practices of sadhana-bhakti, prescribed in numerous scriptures such as the Padma Purana, the Hari-bhakti-vilasa, and the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The Ekadashi fast involves abstinence from grains and legumes, and the most strict practitioners observe a complete fast from all food and water (Nirjala Ekadashi). The spiritual purpose of Ekadashi is not mere bodily penance, but the intensification of devotion: the time and energy normally dedicated to eating are redirected toward chanting the holy names (harinama), reading scriptures, meditation, and seva. Each Ekadashi carries a particular name and story, usually narrated in the Puranas, explaining the specific spiritual benefits associated with its observance. Gaudiya acharyas consider the regular observance of Ekadashi an essential spiritual vow that purifies the heart, strengthens the practitioner's determination, and deeply pleases Bhagavan.
