Kīrtana
Kīrtana is the audible glorification of Kṛṣṇa through singing or reciting His holy names, qualities, forms, teachings, and pastimes. It is one of the nine practices of navadhā-bhakti and holds a central place because both the singer and the hearers may simultaneously contact transcendental sound. It is not merely a musical expression; its essence is the offering of voice, attention, and heart to the Lord.
Kīrtana may be performed simply by one voice or congregationally with response, instruments, and dancing. When it focuses specifically on the holy names it is called nāma-saṅkīrtana. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu spread it as the process especially suited for Kali-yuga, accessible regardless of birth, education, or social condition. In the association of the Vaiṣṇavas, chanting cultivates humility, cooperation, and remembrance of Kṛṣṇa, provided that it does not become entertainment or a means of personal prestige.
Authentic kīrtana includes attentive hearing of what is being sung. Conscious pronunciation and receptive hearing gather the distracted mind and nourish smaraṇa. Through perseverance, kīrtana cleanses the heart, weakens selfish desires, and awakens taste for bhakti. Its perfection is measured neither by musical virtuosity, loudness, nor passing emotion, but by a growing desire to serve Kṛṣṇa, honor the Vaiṣṇavas, and live according to the guidance of the guru and the śāstras.
