Abhidheya
Abhidheya is the second pillar of the threefold system of spiritual knowledge in Gaudiya Vaishnavism, translating as "the process" or "the means." While sambandha establishes the theoretical understanding of the relationship between the soul, God, and material energy, abhidheya designates the practical method by which the soul can re-establish its lost connection with Bhagavan. In the theology of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the abhidheya is specifically identified with bhakti-yoga: pure devotional service directed toward Krishna. This service includes the regulated practice (sadhana-bhakti) with its nine principal forms of devotion (navavidha-bhakti), such as hearing (sravanam), chanting (kirtanam), remembering (smaranam), serving the lotus feet (pada-sevanam), deity worship (arcana), offering prayers (vandanam), serving (dasyam), friendship (sakhyam), and complete surrender (atma-nivedanam). The abhidheya is not a mechanical or ritualistic process, but a progressive transformation of the heart through constant practice under the guidance of the guru and the association of advanced devotees (sadhu-sanga). By executing this process with sincerity and dedication, the practitioner purifies consciousness and advances toward the awakening of supreme divine love (prayojana).
