Sambandha
Sambandha is the first pillar of the threefold system of spiritual knowledge expounded by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and codified by the Six Gosvamis of Vrindavana. Literally meaning "relationship," it designates the knowledge of the eternal connection between three fundamental realities: God (Bhagavan), individual souls (jivas), and material energy (maya). Understanding sambandha means knowing who God is, who we are as souls, and what our constitutional position is in relation to Him and to the material world. According to Gaudiya theology, Krishna is the Supreme Truth and the source of everything, the individual souls are His eternal marginal spiritual particles, and the material energy is His inferior potency that functions as the field of activities for souls who have forgotten their relationship with Him. Without this relational knowledge, the practitioner lacks the philosophical orientation needed for effective spiritual practice. Sambandha forms the theoretical basis that motivates and directs devotional practice (abhidheya) toward its ultimate goal (prayojana). It is the foundation upon which all spiritual life in Gaudiya Vaishnavism is built, studied in detail in works such as Jiva Goswami's Sat-sandarbhas and Bhaktivinoda Thakura's Jaiva-dharma.
