Caitanya-bhagavata
The Caitanya-bhagavata is the earliest comprehensive biography of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, composed in the Bengali language by Vrindavana dasa Thakura in the mid-16th century (c. 1548), shortly after Chaitanya’s passing. It is a foundational literary work of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. Initially titled Caitanya-mangala, the book was renamed to highlight its spiritual connection to the Srimad-Bhagavatam. The text chronicles Chaitanya’s childhood, His youth as a scholar (Nimai Pandita) in Navadvipa, and the early years of the public sankirtan movement. While the later Caitanya-caritamrta emphasizes advanced theology and Chaitanya’s final years in Puri, the Caitanya-bhagavata is celebrated for its narrative details, its depiction of daily life in Bengal, and its focus on the divine pastimes of Chaitanya and Nityananda Prabhu. It remains an important historical source and a cherished devotional classic within the Vaishnava community. The narrative format makes the teachings accessible and sweet, serving as a beautiful entry point for anyone wishing to understand the Gaudiya tradition.
