Guru-tattva

Guru-tattva is the spiritual truth concerning the guru, the teacher’s function, and relationship with Bhagavān, the disciple, and guru-paramparā. A genuine master represents Kṛṣṇa by faithfully transmitting His teaching and engaging the jīva in service, not by becoming Kṛṣṇa or possessing independent authority. The disciple therefore honors the guru as a manifestation of divine mercy while understanding that all potency comes from the Lord and bhakti. This truth includes complementary functions such as dīkṣā-guru, śikṣā-guru, and saintly teachers who instruct through example and writings. Diversity of service need not produce doctrinal contradiction when all transmit the same siddhānta. The guru teaches sambandha-jñāna, guides practice of the mahā-mantra, corrects deviation, and helps the disciple serve the Vaiṣṇavas. Qualification is recognized through fidelity to śāstra, character, realization, and absence of exploitative motive, not merely institution, biological lineage, or popularity. Understanding guru-tattva avoids two extremes: treating the master as ordinary and attributing an infallibility that excuses abuse or contradicts śāstra. Spiritual surrender requires intelligence, sincere questions, and moral responsibility. A genuine guru leads toward Kṛṣṇa rather than egocentric dependence and accepts service to offer it to Bhagavān, not to nourish domination. A disciple serves by applying instruction, cultivating humility, and cooperating with the devotional community. Guru-tattva fulfills its purpose by strengthening trust in the paramparā, protecting the practitioner, and awakening prema for Kṛṣṇa.
