Śikṣā-guru

Śikṣā-guru is a teacher who provides spiritual instruction and practical guidance on the path of bhakti. A person may receive teaching from several śikṣā-gurus, while the dīkṣā-guru establishes the initiatory relationship and gives mantra. These functions complement one another when they faithfully transmit the same siddhānta. Authority does not arise from title alone, but from realization, conduct, knowledge of śāstra, and the capacity to lead a disciple toward Kṛṣṇa. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition honors genuine teachers as Bhagavān’s merciful representatives. A śikṣā-guru explains sambandha-jñāna, corrects error, resolves doubt, and teaches one to hear hari-kathā, chant the mahā-mantra, and serve the Vaiṣṇavas. Guidance may come through direct association, classes, letters, or the ācāryas’ writings. Such a teacher neither invents private doctrine nor seeks psychological dependence, but helps the jīva develop discernment, responsibility, and an increasingly conscious relationship with Kṛṣṇa. A disciple listens respectfully, asks sincerely, and verifies agreement with śāstra, guru-paramparā, and saintly teachers. Spiritual obedience never authorizes abuse, manipulation, or concealment of harmful conduct. When instructions appear to conflict, humble dialogue and mature counsel are needed rather than sectarian rivalry. Service to the śikṣā-guru means applying instruction for Bhagavān’s pleasure. Success is measured not by admirers but by disciples developing character, understanding, steady service, and prema for Kṛṣṇa.
