Jaiva-dharma
Jaiva-dharma ("The Constitutional Dharma of the Soul") is a masterpiece of Vaishnava literature, written in Bengali by Bhaktivinoda Thakura in the late 19th century. Presented as a philosophical novel, the work combines literary narrative with theological depth, using dialogues between fictional characters—brahmanas, sannyasis, and devotees from different schools—to present the most complex teachings of Gaudiya Vaishnavism in an accessible manner. Throughout its forty chapters, Jaiva-dharma systematically develops the three pillars of spiritual knowledge: sambandha (the soul's relationship with God), abhidheya (the process of spiritual realization through bhakti), and prayojana (the supreme goal of prema). The text explains the difference between the temporary dharma of the material body and the eternal dharma of the soul (jiva), whose constitutional function is loving service to Krishna. In its more advanced chapters, the work details the practice of raganuga-bhakti and meditation on the pastimes of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavana. Jaiva-dharma is considered by many acharyas to be the most complete and accessible presentation of Gaudiya theology in modern times.
