Vivāha

Vivāha is the Vedic saṁskāra of marriage through which two people publicly accept mutual responsibilities within gṛhastha-āśrama. It is not understood merely as a contract based upon attraction or material convenience, but as a religious commitment made before Bhagavān, the guru, the Vaiṣṇavas, one’s family, and sacred fire. Its vows are intended to order household life according to dharma and provide stability for spiritual cooperation, hospitality, family care, and service. Vedic tradition recognizes that married life can regulate desire and provide a responsible setting for children. The Vaiṣṇava purpose, however, is not simply the attainment of artha and kāma or the continuation of social prestige. Husband and wife endeavor to help one another remember Kṛṣṇa, hear hari-kathā, chant the mahā-mantra, honor prasāda, and educate their children in bhakti. When a home centers upon service, it becomes a gṛha-āśrama, a place of spiritual formation; when centered only upon sense gratification, it remains gṛhamedha. Vivāha does not automatically guarantee harmony or spiritual advancement. It requires fidelity, truthfulness, patience, mutual protection, and willingness to correct selfishness. Under the guidance of the guru and mature Vaiṣṇavas, a couple learns to meet difficulties without abandoning duty or using religion to dominate the other person. Genuine renunciation does not mean neglecting those who depend upon one, but offering the fruits of family life to Kṛṣṇa. Marriage may thus become a sustained practice of service, responsibility, and purification of the heart.
