Samskara
Samskara is a Sanskrit term meaning "impression," "refinement," or "purification." In Vedic philosophy it refers both to the subtle impressions left upon consciousness by one's actions and experiences, and to the sacred rites of passage that sanctify the different stages of human life. From the perspective of Gaudiya Vaisnavism, these two meanings are closely connected. Activities performed under the influence of Karma create samskaras that shape the future tendencies of the Atma throughout the cycle of Saṁsāra, whereas the practice of Bhakti gradually replaces material conditioning with spiritual impressions directed toward Bhagavan. Scriptures explain that association with devotees, the study of the Bhagavad-gītā and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, together with practices such as Japa, Saṅkīrtana, and Seva, generate spiritual samskaras that purify the heart and awaken devotion. In a broader sense, the word also denotes the traditional Vedic sacraments, yet Bhakti-yoga emphasizes that genuine inner transformation ultimately arises through sincere devotional practice and the mercy of the Guru and the Guru-paramparā.
